Meet Our Judges

Katie Simrell

Cosplay  Judge

Katie Simrell has been cosplaying for 15 years, always looking to create giant wings, giant centaurs, and cute girls. She makes crafting videos on YouTube where she documents the process of building her most complicated costumes. That's where you can watch her succeed (and fail) at innovative new techniques and compete in cosplay contests all across the country.

She loves to put her crafting knowledge into the world and help budding cosplayers enter this amazing community. She's partnered with RIOT Games to bring their characters to life, and brands like Lumin's workshop and Miccostumes. Simrell has a passion for D&D, dogs, and yaoi.

Mahou Meggles Cosplay

Cosplay  Judge

Meghan, AKA Mahou Meggles, is a longtime cosplay hobbyist, and has been active in the community for over 15 years. Aside from an occasional Good Bit, her favorite part of cosplay is the process of translating the designs of her favorite characters into wearable art.

She focuses most of her energy on garment sewing, though she has been known to dabble in wig styling, resin craft, and prop & armor fabrication. She has won several competitive awards, and looks forward to taking the stage at the Master craftsmanship level soon!

In the meantime, she’ll be planning more cosplays from Hades, Witch Hat Atelier, Kingdom Hearts, and more. She loves to talk craft, so hit her up with any curiosities you may have.

Melon Moonbeam

Cosplay  Judge

Melon_moonbeam (Aka Ari) has spent 17 years cosplaying and going to anime conventions. When it comes to making costumes, she  prefers working with fabric over prop making. What she enjoys most about cosplaying is being able to bring to life the outfits from her favorite anime with her own personal spin.  Her love for sewing also stems from a love of being able to create art.

For Ari, cosplay is a form of self expression and  creativity that she is always happy to share with friends and other members of the community.

Katie Simrell

Cosplay  Judge

Katie Simrell is a 15-year cosplay creator known for ambitious handmade builds, crafting tutorials, national cosplay competitions, and collaborations with brands like RIOT Games, Lumin’s Workshop, and Miccostumes.

Meet Contest Coordinator

Hello! For the past couple months, I have worked together with Big Z Fabric to create a fun for all cosplay event and contest to pair with their annual rummage sale! We all start somewhere as crafters and sewists, so don’t be shy to participate in cosplay events with pieces you’ve made or altered! My first days I was taking what I could find in the house like cutting and gluing fabrics (bedsheets haha) together and even using tea bags to dye fabric. I was so moved by cosplay as a teenager that I pursued a BFA and after graduating from my university, I worked within the fashion industry for household fashion brands, and somehow continued to be apart of the convention and cosplay scene for over 20 years.

So, if you are just starting your journey, and may have only bought or commissioned cosplays, or just only creating your first garments, you have many exciting things ahead of you (and not only myself, but many other experienced cosplayers) are here to root you on and participate alongside you at Big Z Fabric’s warehouse on July 11th! Look forward to seeing you there!
