DIY Guide: Turning an Acrylic Drawer Organizer Into a Cozy, Plush Display

How to Refresh an Old Drawer Box With Fabric

Sometimes the best DIY projects start with something simple you already have or can find secondhand. In our Instagram channel, Blueclarice shared a quick tutorial showing how to transform an old drawer box into a clean, cozy organizer using fabric Scraps.

This is an easy weekend project that instantly upgrades the look and feel of your organizer and it’s also a great way to reuse materials you already have.

What You’ll Need

  • An old drawer box / organizer (thrifted, stored, or secondhand)
  • Fabric (you can use any fabric you like) We recommend soft, plush, or fuzzy fabrics for a cozy finish
  • Scissors
  • Chalk or fabric marker
  • Sewing machine (optional)
  • Pillow stuffing / polyfill (for the top cushion)

Step 1: Clear the Organizer and Clean It

Start with a clean slate:

  1. Remove everything from the top and the drawers.

  2. Wipe down the inside and out so your liners sit nicely and look clean.

This step also makes the “after” reveal way more clean.

Step 2: The Satisfying Part, Peel the Old Fabric

If the organizer already has fabric liners (or old, worn material), carefully remove them. Try to keep the pieces as intact as possible, because you’ll reuse them as templates.

Tip: If the old fabric was glued in, go slowly so you don’t tear the shapes.

Step 3: Use the Old Fabric Pieces as Templates for the New Liners

Instead of guessing measurements, use the original fabric panels as your patterns:

  1. Lay the old fabric flat over your new fabric.

  2. Trace the shape.

  3. Cut the new pieces.

You can use any type of fabric you want, but we recommend choosing something soft and fluffy to add comfort and a more “finished” look to the drawers.

Step 5: Use the Old Fabric to Create a Template for a Padded Top Cushion

You can also upgrade the top by creating a soft cushion:

  1. Use the old fabric as the template base.

  2. Cut the new top fabric slightly larger than the drawer liners.

    • This matters because the cushion will be filled, and you’ll need extra room for the thickness.

  3. Add stuffing (polyfill) to create a padded, pillow-like topper.

Optional: Sew around the edges for a cleaner, more durable cushion finish.

Step 6: Place Everything Back Into the Box

Now assemble the final look:

  • Insert the new fabric liners into each drawer

  • Place the padded top cushion on the organizer

  • Put drawers back in and style it however you like

That’s it. Your old organizer now feels refreshed, cleaner, and more cozy.
