There is something special about seeing fabric transformed into something completely unexpected.
A roll of fabric can become a flowing gown, a detailed character costume, a creature, a piece of armor, or an entire story brought to life. At Big Z Fabric, we get to see the materials that make these projects possible every day, but seeing those materials become finished creations is something else entirely.
That is exactly what happened when the Big Z Warehouse welcomed Southern California’s cosplay community for the Big Z Fabric Summer Cosplay Contest & Rummage Sale.

A Community Built Around Creativity

Working alongside Vanessa Grundy, better known as Daydreamernessa (@daydreamernessa), who coordinated the cosplay contest, Big Z set out to create something a little more personal: a community-driven space where local cosplayers could connect, celebrate their craft, and share the creativity behind their work.
The event also gave attendees the opportunity to explore the Big Z Fabric Rummage Sale, browse available materials and finds, and discover items that could inspire future creative projects.
Creative Firsts

The warehouse quickly filled with an incredible variety of cosplay looks, characters, and creators. Some participants had traveled from as far as Santa Clarita, while others were newer faces in the cosplay community. For many contestants, the event marked an important milestone.
Some stepped into the spotlight with their first fully handmade costume. Others had styled their first wig, completed their first major cosplay project, or brought their first standalone fursuit to be seen and appreciated by fellow creators.
For some, it was also their first experience having their hard work reviewed through a light craftsmanship judging process.
Cosplay can be a very personal process. Hours are spent sewing, crafting, experimenting, fixing mistakes, starting over, and slowly watching an idea come together.
Each contestant took to the runway, shared their cosplay, and briefly talked about the character and the work behind their creation.
Every look had its own personality, and every creator had their own story.
Supporting the Cosplay Community
Helping guide the contest were local cosplayers Mahou Meggles (@mahoumeggles), Katie Simrell (@katiesimrell), and Melon MoonBeam (@melon_moonbeam), who joined the event as judges.
With so many creative and inspiring entries, narrowing the field down to a handful of winners was incredibly difficult. Each participant brought something different to the runway, from craftsmanship and presentation to creativity and character.
But beyond judging, one of the most meaningful parts of the day came afterward.
The judges stayed to answer questions, offer encouragement, and connect with participants about their experiences in cosplay. For newer creators especially, the opportunity to speak with experienced members of the community made the event about much more than competition. It became a space for learning, encouragement, and inspiration.
Behind the Camera

Local photographer Alex Kith (@the.kith) captured the energy of the day.
The Big Z Warehouse became an unexpected cosplay photo set, filled with characters, costumes, and creative personalities. After the winners were announced, participants also had the opportunity to step in front of Alex's camera for professional portraits.
We appreciate Alex for helping capture the creativity, craftsmanship, and memorable moments throughout the event.

More Than Competition

The day was about more than choosing winners or finding materials for the next creative project.
It was about creating a place where someone could show off their first handmade costume.
It was about giving newer cosplayers the opportunity to meet experienced creators.
It was about asking questions, sharing ideas, and encouraging each other to keep making things.
The combination of the cosplay contest and rummage sale gave attendees the opportunity to celebrate creativity in different ways, whether they were showcasing a finished cosplay, supporting a fellow creator, connecting with the community, or searching for inspiration for their next project.
Most importantly, it was about community.
Thank You
At Big Z Fabric, we are constantly inspired by what our customers and the creative community make.
Fabric is just the beginning. The real magic happens when someone takes an idea and decides to bring it to life.
Whether you are working on your first cosplay, your next competition piece, a fursuit, or a project nobody has ever seen before, we hope you continue challenging yourself and exploring what you can create.
A special thank you to Vanessa Grundy AKA Daydreamernessa (@daydreamernessa) for coordinating the cosplay contest, our judges Mahou Meggles (@mahoumeggles), Katie Simrell (@katiesimrell), and Melon Moonbeam (@melon_moonbeam) for sharing their time and experience, and Alex Kith (@the.kith) for capturing the event.
And to every cosplayer, contestant, attendee, and creative who came out to support the event and explore the Big Z Fabric Rummage Sale:
Thank you.
We cannot wait to see what you make next.
